What a padded tank top is

A padded tank top has thin, soft pads sitting inside the front, usually in pockets on an inner layer. The tank holds you; the pads give a smooth, rounded shape and stop anything showing through the fabric. It is the reason many women can wear a fitted tank in public without a bra underneath.

• Shape: a natural, rounded line instead of a flattened one.

• Smoothness: no bra seams or hooks showing through your top.

Removable pads or sewn-in pads?

Sewn-in pads never move, but you cannot take them out to wash or adjust. Removable pads can be taken out for washing, reshaped, or left out on days you want a lighter feel. Maggies Tanks use removable pads, so you can choose.

One honest tip from customers: put the pads back in flat after washing. If one folds inside its pocket, smooth it out with your fingers before you put the tank on.

Padding is not the same as support

Pads shape; the tank supports. In a simple padded cami the support may come from one thin elastic band. In a built-in bra tank the support comes from an inner layer across the whole front, with wide straps carrying the weight. If you want to wear it instead of a bra all day, look for both: a full inner layer and pads.

Caring for a padded tank

1. Take the pads out before washing.
2. Wash the tank cool and gentle, by hand or on a delicate cycle.
3. Let the pads air-dry fully, then slide them back in flat.
